This is a pencil sketch and Flash linework of a rough character idea.
He is one of the urban sprites, or modern fairies or whatever I decide to call these guys. I have some characters rolling around that make of parts of city life that you don’t see. Similar to how fairy folk and goblins and sprites made up the unseen world in different ages, these folk fill in the dark corners in this age.
I did the line work for this sketch in Flash, because I like how Flash handles the pressure sensitivity using the Wacom tablet. It also takes some of the wobble out of brush strokes, making for a cleaner line. This is good for novice brushwielders, a little digital help certainly doesn’t hurt. As long as you don’t crank up the settings too high, you can get a nice expressive line.
I’ve also included a quick composite of the character on a shot I took near and abandoned building in East St. Louis. The perspective doesn’t match, but you get the idea.
